Webcasting 101: TV on Your PC
by Kendall Callas
Join me as we suit up for yet another paddle through the eddies and backwaters of streaming video in the legal community. Each month we highlight examples of law firm, court, and law school “webcasts” — video over the Internet.

WHAT’S ON TONIGHT?

Once again, we mine video gold from the Internet archives of the nation’s law schools. Try to continue breathing normally as we begin our visit to the Internet Broadcast Archive of the University of Houston Law Center.

Dead Man Walking

A diamond in the rough, there is one video on this site that offers a compelling reason to visit. ‘Dead Man Walking’ author Sister Helen Prejean gives a very interesting “Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in America,” and speaks of the unanticipated journey which opened her eyes to racism in our judicial system.

A nun and educator, her Pulitzer prize-nominated book was made into an acclaimed movie starring Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn. Her straightforward delivery and earnest truth actually made it worth squinting to watch a screen smaller than a business card for all 77 minutes of this 2002 speech. (Drag the horizontal slider on your media player to skip the first 5 minutes of introduction.)

This site is very friendly to dial-up viewers, with links for 28K and 56K dial-up access, as well as High Speed. I’m sorry to report that most of the media on this site either were missing, wouldn’t play, or had inaudible audio; curiously, the older entries in the archive played fine — it was the most recent additions that had problems.

Too many webcasts, not enough time. If you see streaming audio or video you think would be of interest to our readers, please URL and description.
