Webcasting 101: TV on Your PC
by Kendall Callas
Thanks for tuning in again for another daring voyage into the dark sea of streaming video. Every month, we discuss law-related examples of video over the Internet.

WHAT’S ON TONIGHT?

Many large repositories of video are not specific to the legal profession, but nevertheless offer valuable resources to the legal community. One such large video archive is provided by our federal government.

Visit www.loc.gov and click and click ‘Webcasts from the Library’ (mid-screen), or go to

“Library of Congress Webcasts”
[play
button]www.loc.gov/today/cyberlc

(Media player required: RealPlayer.)

The nearly 900 webcasts available range from 1988 to date, and between 4 and 113 minutes in length. At screen left, note the seven links to browse by category:

  • Biography, History - 202 videos
  • Culture, Performing Arts - 74 videos
  • Education - 35 videos
  • Government, World Affairs - 84 videos
  • Poetry, Literature - 404 videos
  • Religion - 13 videos
  • Science, Technology - 81 videos
You may wish to browse a category or two above, but with this many webcasts to choose from you might want to jump to the bottom line: use the search function via the box at top right. Type a search phrase into the box and press Enter to review a list of likely webcasts. The first few results from a search for “law” include the following:
  • A Matter of Law: A Memoir of Struggle in the Cause of Equal Rights, by Judge Robert L. Carter, 5/25/2005, 61 minutes

  • Hard Science - Hard Choices: Science, Ethics and the Law, by William Safire, Mike Gazzaniga, Hank Greely, 5/10/2005, 51 minutes

  • The Shield of Achilles: War, Law and the Course of History, by Phillip Bobbitt, Sir Michael Howard, 3/19/2003, 65 minutes

  • Judgment Days: Lyndon Baines Johnson, Martin Luther King Jr. and the Laws That Changed America, by Nick Kotz, 3/01/2005, 60 minutes

  • Jefferson and His Legacy, by Joseph Ellis, Annette Gordon-Reed, 7/25/2000, 35 minutes

  • Taming the Regulation of Culture, by Lawrence Lessig, 3/03/2005, 31 minutes

  • In the Name of National Security: Unchecked Presidential Power and the Reynolds Case, by Louis Fisher, 9/11/2006, 56 minutes
One nice feature is the inclusion of the speaker’s biography in each webcast listing.

Need something to entertain you? Search or browse the ‘Poetry, Literature’ category and you’ll more than likely to find a talk by your favorite author.

Finally, your tax dollars paid for something worthwhile!

Too many webcasts, not enough time. If you see streaming audio or video you think would be of interest to our readers, please URL and description.
